Origin of the Name Na Kluea

Na Kluea is a trading and fishing community located in the Na Kluea Bay area, Bang Lamung District, Chonburi Province. The origin of the name "Na Kluea" comes from community storytelling. There is no evidence that this area had sea salt fields, but it is assumed that "Na Kluea" (salt field) was likely a corruption of the words "Na Klua" (scary field). In the past, traveling to trade at Na Kluea meant passing through overgrown forests, rice fields, and grasslands, as well as being wary of bandits, which led to the area being called "Na Klua" (scary) before it was corrupted to "Na Kluea."

A Prosperous Trading District

In the past, Na Kluea was a thriving trading district with Na Kluea Market as its center. Surrounding communities, no matter how far, had to travel to trade at Na Kluea. This can be seen from traces of transportation routes including ox-cart paths and footpaths from rice fields and mountain forests leading to the seaside area through Trok Rong Ya and Trok Thai Silp alleys, which were once the main routes to the Na Kluea trading district before developing into roads that became transportation hubs connecting surrounding areas.

Evidence showing Na Kluea as a commercial center includes markets, agricultural supply stores, pharmacies, daily goods stores, bookstores serving as provincial book distribution agents, restaurants and food ingredient shops, fishing grounds, government offices, and entertainment venues such as opium dens, cinemas, and theaters, as well as important religious sites indicating that Na Kluea was an ancient community where people migrated to trade, establish residences, and pursue occupations until prosperity emerged.

Community Transformation

The transformation of the Na Kluea community likely resulted from significant factors including a fire in the market area and the construction of a new market. The growth of Pattaya and its emergence as a world-renowned tourist center, the expansion of Sukhumvit Road making travel more convenient—these factors gradually reduced the necessity of traveling to Na Kluea Market, resulting in the gradual decline of the Na Kluea trading district.

Currently, Na Kluea Market is abandoned with few vendors. The bustling area is now the nearby Lan Pho Market, selling fresh seafood for tourists and established as Pattaya's famous fresh seafood market today, as small-scale fishing still occurs in significant numbers.

Na Kluea Today

Although many shops and occupations in Na Kluea have ceased operations, traces of local architecture settlements remain. The people of Na Kluea can still pass on stories of occupations, shops, and important places of Na Kluea's past for others to hear, as compiled for reading in this book... "Na Kluea of Yesterday."
