Chinatown Bangkok Heritage Project

The Chinatown Bangkok Heritage Project emerged from collaboration between the Thai Health Promotion Foundation (ThaiHealth) and the Asawin Institute to restore and develop the Chinatown area with concepts aimed at maintaining Chinatown as the nation's economic center, which has historical, architectural, and unique lifestyle value.

The project has been operating continuously since 2012 under the Chinatown Walking District Project, which aims to promote Samphanthawong District as a walkable community and suitable for walking (Walkable City).

Riverside Walking Route

Starting Point: Hoon Bridge

Key Stops:
1. Hoon Bridge - Route starting point
2. Phirom Alley - Ancient community along Ong Ang Canal
3. Songsawat Road Intersection - Trading district connection point
4. Lao Pun Tao Gong Shrine - Important religious site
5. Luang Kocha Itsahak Mosque - Historic mosque
6. Wat Pathum Khongkha Ratchaworawihan - Royal temple
7. Holy Rosary Church (Kalwar) - Catholic church serving the district

Places of Interest Along the Route

Wat Bophit Phimuk Worawihan
- Ancient temple dating from Ayutthaya period
- Originally called Wat Choeng Len or Wat Teen Len
- Features traditional-style ubosot and vihara

Ya Chun Alley
- Alley connecting from Hoon Bridge along Ong Ang Canal
- Formerly a chewing tobacco production area, mainly Teochew Chinese businesses
- Before 1957, had 100-150 tobacco shops

Jib Hua Heng Salt Mill
- Located in Phirom Phakdi Community
- Operating alongside the community for over 80 years
- Processes sea salt through cleaning and grinding into refined salt

Songsawat Road
- Trading district with historic buildings

Lao Pun Tao Gong Shrine
- Important religious site for Chinese community

Luang Kocha Itsahak Mosque
- Historic mosque showing religious diversity

Route Purpose

This walking tour route aims to:

3. Learn Cultural Heritage - Important cultural heritage of Chinatown is typically located along walking alleys

4. Promote Health - Aligns with ThaiHealth strategies regarding health spaces conducive to physical activity

5. Historical Tourism - Serves as tourism routes for learning the district's history
