Read More About Trok Ya Chun

Trok Ya Chun is an alley connecting from Saphan Han along Khlong Ong Ang to Wat Bophit Phimuk. Originally inside the alley was a source of making ya chun (tobacco), mostly Teochew Chinese business. They received ya chun or dried tobacco leaves cut into shreds from Hakka Chinese in Kanchanaburi Province, and brought them to roll with banana leaves or rolling paper into tobacco. Those who rolled were usually women, because it required delicacy in rolling and separating banana leaves or rolling paper to sell to those who wanted to buy to roll tobacco themselves. In addition to ya chun, they also sold mild tobacco for chewing with betel.
Before 1957, in Trok Ya Chun there were 100-150 shops, most of which were wholesalers both domestic and international. Until factory-produced cigarettes became popular and replaced them, making ya chun less popular. Old ya chun shops in Trok Ya Chun, such as Jib Hua Seng shop. Currently in Trok Ya Chun, besides wooden shophouses lined up in the alley, there are also old buildings built in Chinese architecture style.
